Choose folders
Subscribe only to the folders whose new messages matter. Server-side mail rules can move selected messages into these folders before the outpost detects them.
Choose a check method
| Method | Use it for | Connection cost |
|---|---|---|
| Realtime (IMAP IDLE) | Messages that need prompt attention | One connection per folder |
| Every 5 or 15 minutes | Less urgent folders | One shared scheduled connection per mailbox |
One additional connection is reserved for management work. For a
mailbox with the default limit of 10, watcher demand can be at most
9:
realtime folders + (1 if any scheduled folders exist).
Increase the limit only within your provider's allowance. The
outpost accepts limits from 2 to 100.
Understand the first subscription
Saving a new subscription establishes a baseline and skips existing messages. Send a new message after saving to verify it. Changing between realtime and scheduled checks preserves progress; removing and adding a subscription establishes a fresh baseline.
After a disconnect, recovery is bounded to the most recent 24 hours. Keep the server online for continuous coverage. An IMAP UIDVALIDITY change creates a new UID namespace; inspect status after server migrations.
Rules, labels and duplicates
Choose the actual server folder receiving the message. A rule that moves mail out of Inbox can make the destination folder the appropriate subscription. Gmail labels can expose one message in several IMAP folders; subscribing to several such folders can produce a notification for each folder.
The console localizes standard folder names, while custom names and raw IMAP paths keep their provider values. Notifications use the folder label together with the mailbox display name.
Verify changes
Save subscriptions, check the mailbox and folder status, then send a new message into a selected folder. A successful channel test only verifies delivery; the first notification tutorial also verifies monitoring.
